Gübelin Gem Lab
The Gübelin Gem Lab team consists of highly qualified and experienced specialists. Each team member receives specialised training in their area of work, whether in gemmology, the operation of analytical instruments or gemstone photography.
On joining the Gübelin Gem Lab team, our gemmologists undergo an intensive two- to three-year internal training programme, equipping them with the expertise required to sign Gübelin Gemmological Reports. We are proud of the knowledge and skills of our team, which, together with each individual’s unique personality, form the strong foundation of our company.
The Gübelin Gem Lab was founded in 1923 to examine and determine the authenticity of the gemstones used in Gübelin jewellery. Its purpose was to maintain the trust of Gübelin’s clients and uphold the company’s values. Since then, the laboratory has grown into one of the world’s most respected institutions of its kind.
As an independent subsidiary of the Gübelin Group, the Gübelin Gem Lab uses the latest scientific methods and state-of-the-art equipment to conduct its analyses. Based on these analyses, it issues highly respected Gemmological Reports. Auction houses, gem traders, jewellers, royal families and collectors around the world rely on these reports for unbiased and trustworthy opinions about their gemstones.

The roots of the Gübelin Gem Lab go back to 1923. Under the aegis of Eduard Josef Gübelin, it
has grown from a small gemmological laboratory examining and determining the authenticity of
gemstones used in the Gübelin family’s jewellery pieces, into one of the most respected institu-
tions of its kind in the world.
A completely independent subsidiary of the Gübelin Group, the Gübelin Gem Lab uses the latest
science and state-of-the-art equipment to carry out its analyses. On the basis of this it issues its
highly respected Gemmological Reports, which are relied upon by famous auction houses, royal

translates these attributes into a simple number: the Gübelin Points. It gives meaningful orien-
tation for privates and for professionals who wish to get a comprehensive ranking for their gem-
stones, in particular as the trade and the consumers become more digital and cannot physically
see and touch them.
The Gübelin Gemstone Rating can be applied to the major types of high-value coloured gem-
stones. The rating procedure assesses different characteristics of the gemstone that contribute to
its beauty, the rarity and the attractiveness.
Only natural (i.e. non-synthetic) and transparent gemstones that are either faceted or polished
qualify for the rating system. Gemstones which have been subjected to common treatments (e.g.
traditional heating, clarity enhancement) can also be rated.
The assessed characteristics yield an overall rating on a scale of 75 to 100 Gübelin Points.

gemstones of different types, the Gübelin Gem Lab introduced its Jewellery Passport in August
2019.
The Jewellery Passport describes a selection of identifying characteristics observed in gemstones.
Among the latter the amount and type of gemstone, the shape as well as the weight as indicated
by the client or as engraved in the jewel.
The findings indicated in a Jewellery Passport merely reflect the state of the jewel as well as the
gemstones at the time of examination and are not exhaustive.

The Provenance Proof initiative, established by the Gübelin Gem Lab, is the umbrella brand of a
bundle of technologies with the combined aim to bring transparency into the gemstone industry.
All solutions and services developed and offered under the Provenance Proof brand are available
to the entire industry. Provenance Proof is an entity separate of the Gübelin Gem Lab, to grant
the required independence. While the Emerald Paternity Test uses physical tracers to identify
the mine’s information, another major project of the Provenance Proof initiative pursues the
complementary approach of a digital track of a gemstone along the value chain; the Provenance
Proof Blockchain creates a digital, decentralized logbook based on blockchain technology that
records individual peer-to-peer transactions, creating a virtual ledger secured through cryptog-
raphy. These two different methods almost perfectly complement each other, and can be used in
combination or separately.
